BELGAUM: The picturesque Vaccine Depot at Tilakwadi here, is all set to become a vaccine research institute with the state government making a budget allocation for it, on Friday. Spread over 50 acres, the depot, which was primarily set up for producing anti-rabies vaccine, boasts of a rich treasure of medicinal plants and its thick tree cover makes it the ideal lung space.
Earlier, several attempts had been made by local politicians to acquire the depot for institutions and other purposes.
But the people of Tilakwadi not only brought political pressure against the handover of the depot to institutions, but also demanded that the government convert it into a botanical park. Deputy chief minister B S Yediyurappa, in his budget speech on Friday, announced that the vaccine research institute would be set up in Belgaum. Local activists, speaking on condition of anonymity, said they had been expecting some activity to restore the institute and are pleased with the latest announcement, as the vaccine depot at present has been converted into a district health office. The depot premises are also home to various rare species of birds, many of which are on the verge of extinction.
